Creating a typical 3 column tableless layout seems to often be an issue for CSS newbies but as this one shows (I hope) it's not as scary as it seems. Note that if you want the side columns to stretch vertically, the center one has to always be the longest.
This layout is xhtml 1.1 and css valid and optimised for IE and Opera as well as browsers with the Gecko and KHTML rendering engines.
